What Are xStocks? A Guide to Tokenized Equities

Tokenized stocks, known as xStocks on the Envestir platform, represent a breakthrough in how everyday investors can access the U.S. stock market. Each xStock is a digital token on the Solana blockchain that is backed one-to-one by real shares of the underlying company. When you buy xAAPL, for example, there is an actual share of Apple held in reserve by the token issuer.

The advantages of tokenized stocks over traditional brokerage accounts are significant. First, xStocks trade on blockchain infrastructure, which means they benefit from near-instant settlement rather than the T+1 or T+2 settlement windows common in traditional finance. Second, because they exist as tokens on Solana, you can hold them in your own noncustodial wallet alongside your crypto assets, giving you a unified portfolio view.

Another key benefit is fractional ownership. Traditional brokerages have introduced fractional shares in recent years, but xStocks take this further by allowing you to hold extremely small fractions of a token. This means you can invest as little as a few dollars in high-priced stocks like Amazon or Berkshire Hathaway without needing to buy a full share.

xStocks on Envestir can be traded against USDC, making the process straightforward. You simply select the stock you want to buy, enter the amount of USDC you wish to spend, and the platform executes the swap through the Jupiter aggregator to find you the best available price. Selling works the same way in reverse — swap your xStock tokens back to USDC at any time.

It is worth noting that xStocks track the price of the underlying equity but may experience slight deviations due to market dynamics on decentralized exchanges. The spread is typically minimal and comparable to what you would see with traditional brokers. As the liquidity for these tokens grows, price tracking will continue to improve.
